Global Financial Data has added a number of sectors to its collection of S&P Sector Indices for the S&P 500 Composite, S&P 400 Midcap, S&P 600 Small Cap and S&P 1500 Supercomposite. During the past few years, S&P has substantially revised its indices and made two major changes. First, S&P added Real Estate as one of the eleven sectors that it divides the stock market into. The reason for this addition is the growth in REITs as investment vehicles. Before this change, real estate stocks were part of the Finance sector. Second, the Telecommunications sector was reorganized as the Communication Services sector. Industries such as Media and Entertainment were moved out of the Consumer Discretionary sector and into Communication Services. Interactive Media and Services were moved out of Information Technology and into Communication Services.
This created two sets of changes. First, the GICS codes for these industries and sub-industries were changed when they moved from one sector to another. Second, new industrial GICS were created. GFD has coordinated all of these changes to ensure that all of the new sector and industry indices are available for the S&P 500, 400, 600 and 1500. GFD provides all of the sector, industry group, industry and sub-industry indices for each of the four Composites that S&P calculates. In addition to this, GFD provides total return indices for each of the eleven sectors for the S&P 500, 400, 600 and 1500.
GFD uses a simple mnemonic structure to designate the ticker for each sector. For the sector indices, they all begin with an underscore (_) followed by a number to indicate which index is referred to for the S&P 500 (5), 400 (4), 600 (6) or 1500 (15). Then that number is followed by SP, and then the GICS is provided. So the code for the S&P 1500 Integrated Oil & Gas Index (GICS 10102010) is _15SP10102010. The code for S&P 400 Banks index (GICS 4010) is _4SP4010. The code for the S&P 600 Home Furnishings Index (GICS 25201020) is _6SP25201020. A similar methodology is used for the Total Returns for the Sectors. The code begins with an underscore (_) followed by a number to indicate which index is referred to for the S&P 400 (4), 600 (6) or 1500 (15), followed by GSP and then the GICS Sector code. So the ticker for the S&P 1500 Finance Sector is _TR15GSP40. The ticker for the S&P 400 Materials Index is _TR4GSP15. No numerical prefix is needed for the S&P 500 Sector Total Return Indices, so the ticker for the S&P 500 Energy sector is _TRGSP10.
Over 1000 different sector, industry group, industry and sub-industry indices are provided from S&P for the S&P 500, 400, 600 and 1500 Indices. In addition to that 150 other S&P indices are provided including total return indices, equal-weight indices, value and growth indices as well as technical indicators of market capitalization, advances, declines and other topics.
